Sustainable Development Goals and Libraries - First European Report

Synthesis of the 2nd European Report on Sustainable Development Goals and Libraries

How are European libraries implementing the Agenda 2030 on sustainable development?

EBLIDA and the National Library of Latvia are happy to inform you that the 2nd European Report on Sustainable Development Goals and Libraries is now online.

It is a dense, informative report showing how convincingly library associations have embarked upon the Agenda 2030 pathway in spite of, or perhaps because of, the catastrophic impact of the pandemic and the poor SDG global record in 2021. It also shows the validity of the EBLIDA approach, which consists not only of stories to be told to administrators and policy-makers for advocacy purposes, but also of a fully-fledged concept framing library work into a much broader and far-reaching scope.

“One year ago, when EBLIDA released the First European Report on SDGs and libraries, the picture was quite disparate, from front runners fully committed to the attainment of SDGs to others with a minimal level of awareness. We can now notice an interesting shift, with libraries developing along two directions: the digital library and the socially inclusive library as a fulfilment of almost all 17 SDGs”, says Ton van Vlimmeren, EBLIDA President.

EBLIDA started a successful collaboration with the National Library of Latvia:
“We are happy to contribute to this report, which we hope will inspire European libraries in their activities, governance and opportunities for funding”, added Katrina Kukaine, leader of the NLL staff who is enthusiastically supporting the project.

The report shows that libraries are committed to the attainment of SDGs in society, reinforces SDG-oriented policies in libraries at European scale and boosts the preparation of projects at national and international level. In this respect, it is a milestone for library work whose impact will be measured hopefully very soon.

The EBLIDA-NLL Second European Report on Sustainable Development Goals and Libraries is available here.

This synthesis will be presented during the EBLIDA-Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe Webinar on 23rd November 2021.
