Press Release: European Parliament Hearing

22 March 2023

"The future of the European Book Sector"

On Tuesday 21 March 2023 EBLIDA - along with PL2030 and IFLA, and other library representatives - participated in a hearing in European Parliament on the "Future of the European Book Sector", organised by Tomasz Frankowski, MEP.

Mr Frankowski has been appointed Rapporteur to the CULT own-initiative report on ‘The future of the European book sector’. The report will not address copyright issues, as they fall within the exclusive competences of JURI.

EBLIDA resorted to the information-rich EBLIDA Handbook on e-lending policies in European Public Libraries, released only one week ago.

The Federation of European Publishers releases every year a long report illustrating not only basic assets of the publishing industry (turnover, number of employees, etc.), but also publishing genres and activities (percentage of e-publishing, children literature, purchasers profiles, etc.).

Their long publication (sliced in ad hoc products when needed) has an introduction of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and is circulating in all EU institutions. It is the basis of their successful advocacy.

On this occasion, EBLIDA was able to respond timely and exhaustively thanks to its Handbook on e-lending policies. An Annual Report on European libraries would very likely be instrumental in raising the profile of libraries and the impact of their advocacy.
