GETTING TO MOLDOVA
Chişinău International Airport
All international flights to Moldova use Chişinău (Kishinev) airport.
There are direct flights into Moldova from Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, Bucharest, Budapest, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, Milan, Minsk, Moscow, Paris, Prague, Rome, Sofia, Timisoara and Vienna amongst others. A cheaper, but more punishing option is to fly to Bucharest and then take a bus or train to Chişinău.
Chişinău is connected to other localities in Moldova and also to other countries.
The connection with other localities is accomplished mostly by buses and train connections.
Bus and minibus
The most popular form of internal transport in Moldova is generally the bus.
Bus service in Chişinău can be very inexpensive, ranging from one to three Lei. Although the city has just three main terminals, buses generally serve as the means of transport between different cities within and outside of Moldova. Popular destinations include Tiraspol, Odessa (Ukraine) and Bucharest, Iaşi and Suceava in Romania.
In Chişinău there are many routes which interconnect all the parts of the city and several means of public transport: buses, trolleybuses and the most widely spread public transport, jitneys. It usually takes around 1-3 minutes for a jitney to come; it should cost no more than three Moldovan Lei.
Rail
Railway of Moldova (CFM)
Chişinău Railway Station
An international railway terminal exists with possible connections to Bucharest, Kiev, Minsk, Odessa and Moscow. Trains from Bucharest are probably the best way to go, as they are the most economical. There are however no discount fares or rail passes available.
Due to certain conflicts between Moldova and the ‘unrecognized Transnistria republic’ the rail traffic towards Ukraine is occasionally stopped.
Taxi
Within Chişinău and its suburbs privately-operated minibuses, known as "maxi-taxis," generally follow the major bus routes and appear more frequently. A ride in a maxi-taxi costs 3 Lei within the city.
Both government and private taxis are very widespread in the city. Most taxis are operated by a group of companies, although there are always "illegal" or owner/operators who skirt the law by operating within the city-limits without a permit.
Government taxis are metered, so if you get a private one bargain for a price before you set off. Many of the taxi companies have a 4-digit service hotline starting with 14-XX e.g. 1400, 1402 and 1422.
The price, between twenty and fifty Lei, should not vary a lot amongst different taxi services. The price may be higher if you come from the airport. You should note that a taxi is always cheaper if booked via a taxi-office.
