SUSPENDED: 28th EBLIDA Annual Council Meeting & Conference

Date: 22 June 2020 to 23 June 2020
Location: SUSPENDED (Belgrade, Serbia)

The title of the 28th EBLIDA Annual Council Meeting & EBLIDA Conference is "Libraries Working for a better World: Implementing Sustainable Development Goals in Europe".

The 28th EBLIDA Conference represents a unique opportunity for librarians willing to embark upon Sustainable Development Goals initiatives which are vibrant and may change the world.

Sustainable Development is not taking place aside or ahead of libraries; it is happening inside of them, and now. UN SDGs are bursting into library activities and providing new, fascinating developments to conventional and innovative library work. The proposal of a European Green Deal made by Ms Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, aims to make the 28 countries in the European Union “climate neutral” by 2050. All European Commission programmes are being modulated in order to attain the seventeen SDG objectives and new funding opportunities will be created. Are librarians prepared for that?

EBLIDA has taken a Europe-oriented, indicator-based and grass-roots approach to UN SDGs. We have built the EBLIDA SDG European House with a Situation Room - the EBLIDA Matrix listing European SDG programmes – and a Fake News-free Room – our partnership with NewsGuard in order to attain SDG 16, Subtarget 10: “Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements”. Through the EBLIDA ELSA (European Libraries and Sustainability Assessment) Working Group we are also working on SDG indicators. EBLIDA’s fully-fledged concept on SDGs implies services, tools and training for the EBLIDA community.

The 28th Annual Conference will be the first occasion to present the EBLIDA SDG approach to a wider audience. At the end of the Conference, each participant will know how to set up, evaluate and report about an SDG project, and how to use EBLIDA services. We wish to share our working methods and enabling tools with you.

In the morning session, Ton van Vlimmeren, EBLIDA President, and Barbara Lison, IFLA President-elect, will present the EBLIDA and the IFLA approaches and will compare them. Inspiring, linked with SDG policies, and evaluable SDG Stories will be presented and evaluated by ELSA Members.

In the afternoon, participants will split into groups and will work on SDG projects using EBLIDA enabling tools. You will be immersed into an administrative culture of sustainability which will empower you to interact with SDG actors external to libraries and to exploit SDG opportunities.

The 28th EBLIDA Conference comes together with a Premium Workshop on 24th June – morning – jointly organised by EBLIDA and LIBER (20 seats currently available for the EBLIDA Conference participants). University librarians and public librarians will work together around a common topic: Citizens’ science and Sustainable Development Goals. This workshop is an ideal prolongation and a practical application of the 28th EBLIDA Conference and is an example of how libraries can implement Sustainable Development activities through Citizens’ Science projects, in particular if related to SDG Targets having an environmental scope (Goals 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15).
